Everyone needs a vice.
November 24, 2007Mine seems to be owning multiple editions of Trivial Pursuit.
I added the 90s “Time Capsule” edition to the collection last night - everywhere I’ve seen it, it’s been $60 to $70, and not in my current budget. Last night, however, I stumbled upon it for $20.
$20!!
So, yeah, I kind of have six versions now. How embarrassing.
The Original
20th Anniversary
Pop Culture DVD 2
Totally 80s
Saturday Night Live (which is as yet unwrapped, am sort of awaiting the perfect SNL-freak to give it to)
90s Time Capsule

This is what happens when I make a joke.
November 10, 2007Candy takes me seriously. GAH.
I feel there’s now an obligation for me to follow the 12-step program she has put so much effort into plagiarizing creating. Unfortunately, this will probably require me to cut back and/or stop sleeping, or to contact the human cloning underworld (does such a thing exist?). Hm. Maybe I can hire a PA to do my commenting for me. Shit. This is going to get expensive.
Damn you, Candy, for calling me on my latent passivity (sounds nicer than laziness, no?) and lack of commenting.

Only Monday.
April 17, 2006Gah. I have 5 days of work ahead of me. How annoying. With my coworker still out of commission, it’s sure to be a busy week, too. Bah.
I’m almost finished another book: In The Company of the Courtesan, which has been surprisingly good. I’ve read several books that take place in the 16th century, but this is the first that is set in Italy - specifically, Rome and Venice. In some ways, it awakens the travel gene in me…Venice must be a beautiful city, and I hope to see it one day.
This weekend also included another movie. The Squid & the Whale isn’t what I’d call a great movie, but it’s passable. Jeff Daniels’ character was an insufferable prick - pompous and overeducated barely scratch the surface. Bleh. However, it was an interesting way to pass 90 minutes of my day off. I’ll leave my review, such as it is, at that.
I have also discovered a new TV show, as if I need any more damn reason to watch the idiot box. Sigh. I highly recommend “What About Brian.” It’s funny. In my books, funny is good, especially when it does not include the following: tired/overdone/boring sitcom “jokes” that were barely funny 20 years ago and have long passed their sell-by date; a canned laugh track and/or studio audience who laugh on cue, like trained monkeys; totally unbelievable stories and/or characters. WAB has none of the above. I will continue to watch.
I recently realized that since the demise of Friends, there is not a sitcom on TV that I manage to watch anymore. People tell me that this or that show is “great” and I still don’t watch. Perhaps another Seinfeld or Friends will come along…it would have to be something special in order to catch my eye. Of course, I’d have to deign to watch it, which could be an issue. Har.
Back to my book. And Medium, w hich starts in 3 minutes. Or I could watch it at 10. Gotta love the satellite!

Saturday night questions.
April 15, 2006How on earth can one (two? I fucking hope not.) mouse be residing in my kitchen? We have three cats. One of whom is quite the mouser. Not that you’d assume it lately. This is the cat who offers up near-daily sacrifices during the summer months. Now? She hasn’t even noticed our little kitchen friend. Gah.
Don’t you hate it when a movie is not anything like you expected? Ok, it was a little bit, but not overall. I watched A History of Violence tonight. Wha? Huh? I didn’t dislike it. I just can’t say I really liked it, either.
Why does it have to snow at Easter? Seriously. This is stupid. Almost all our snow is gone, and then we get hours of the white shit falling yesterday. I suppose I should be happy it didn’t stick to the roads or stay long once the temps came up. Hmph.
Don’t you also hate when a really good book ends? Especially when the previous book in the series sucked in a huge way. The new book makes me want more, more, more.
Ever noticed how weekend TV is absolutely terrible? Sure I could have watched March of the Penguins again, and now LOTR: The Return of the King is on. Hobbit crying. Men gathering for war. Freaky orcs killing. I do love this movie, but not every. damn. weekend.
Damn movie. It’s sucking me in. Will NOT stay up until 1:30 to see the end. No.

Movie Reviews
April 10, 2006Pride & Prejudice (Kiera Knightley version):
I enjoyed this movie far more than expected. I knew the basic story, but had never read the book or seen any previous version on film. The general 18th-century feeling was amazing - from the Bennets’ house, to the costumes and the intricate dances. The forced politeness of their society was amusing - even when people disliked each other immensely, it was there.
Memoirs of a Geisha
I feared seeing this one, mostly because the book was so incredible, and I would be disappointed if they screwed up the movie. Happily, it’s perfect! The casting, the costumes, the music, everything. It’s on my list of all-time favourites as of today.
I suck at this. Really. There are very few movies I see that I don’t like, and I can’t get across how much I enjoy certain movies. Then there are other “blockbuster” movies that I see, and I don’t get the appeal. Sure, they’re ok, but they don’t necessarily live up to the hype. I’m not a movie snob, and I don’t pick apart movies (unless they’re So. Awful. they deserve it). I watch them to escape my life, the same reason I read.

How smart are you?
March 11, 2006A small joke for all, to perhaps bring a smile:
Two fishermen, sitting by a dock. One looks at the other, after a tug on his line, and this is what ensues:
Fisherman #1: M R FISH!
Fisherman #2: M R NO FISH!
F #1: M R FISH! C D B D iiiiiiiii?
F #2: WHALE OIL BEEF HOOKED. M R FISH.
There’s a birdwatcher version too, but this is my favourite.

How trivial.
March 7, 2006I am, at times, a bottomless pit of UBIs (Useless Bits of Information). On rare occasions, this actually works in my favour. Compared to the other 98% of the time, when I’m basically a geek who knows a teeny bit about too many things to be considered even slightly smart about anything.
Tonight fell into that 2%! Four of us from work entered a team in the local Trivia Night, and we took 2nd place. Take that, toy store KnowItAlls (who took 3rd, but kicked our sorry asses last year). I have yet to discover where the auto-body shop is digging up all their Mensa candidates (I smell ringers….), but hey, we took 2nd. In addition to the beeyootiful medals, we get money!
I am $30 richer tonight. Woo!
The one question I’m glad I knew tonight:
What boxing champion was also nominated for a Grammy?
Give up?

Fluff is good for your health.
March 5, 2006Watched Just Like Heaven this evening. Cute movie! I always like Reese Whatsherspoon, and that Mark Ruffalo dude is kinda cute. Not really my type, but he’s passable in the Eye Candy department.
Me, I prefer the Orlando Bloom school of Eye Candy. Yummy yum yum! Saw Elizabethtown last weekend - not really fluff, not really that dramatic. Just a nice little movie. Honestly, there are few movies I don’t like. I’d probably suck as a movie reviewer.
For fun, I took the Perfect Oscar Date quiz, link courtesy of Candy.
According to the quiz, my perfect date is Leo Dicaprio. No objections here! He’s only a year younger than me, so there’s no cradle-robbing going on. Woo!
Mmmm….off to watch Viggo save Middle Earth now. Again.

Friday randomness.
March 3, 2006Not sure what might spill forth from the grey matter this evening, hence the title. It’s been one of those days. Weird. Not bad, just weird.
Launchcast is currently playing one of my favourite songs from high school: Wilson Phillips, Hold On. It’s like an instant trip down memory lane to grade 11 (or so), dancing & singing in my friend Debbie’s basement. I still know the words. Is that funny or just pathetic?
Have I mentioned my love of Launchcast lately? It’s now segued into some Huey. As in “& the News.” I know this song too!! Heee! (Power of Love)
Yes, my taste in music is embarrassing at times. So what? I like to mix it up. Classical music is my all-time favourite, but you can’t quite head-bang to it.
MMMM…..Savage Garden. Still peeved they broke up. Grr.
Anyhoo, it’s been an odd week. I was half-hoping for someone to scrap with at work (verbally, not physically) today. Just not in a mood to take any crap. But not bitchy. Kind of borderline on all fronts.
D’s away until Sunday, and I’m enjoying his absence. He won a ski trip through work, so he and a bunch of other guys from the company are being wined and dined all weekend. In between skiing and snowboarding, of course. He called tonight, and his report on snowboarding, which he tried for the first time today? “When someone tells you that snowboarding is fun, send them to me. It hurt to take a fucking shower tonight. ” *moan groan*
I’m just relieved that he wasn’t calling from the ICU. Har.
The boys and I had a nice dinner tonight, and they didn’t bitch and cry over the food. Well, not too much. Now I’m getting harassed every. two. minutes. for cookies, because I made the mistake of saying they could have some later. Well. “Later” is a relative term. When you’re three, later occurs pretty damn quickly. Argh.
Will have to make good on the cookie promise.
My big weekend plans include:
- begging a ride to town to register Austin for soccer. (oh yeah, I have no wheels all weekend. Joy.)
- watching the movies I rented. (Just Like Heaven & Hidalgo)
- baking bread (maybe)
- studying (would like to say maybe, but I gotta get on that)
I talked to our logger friend today. We’re going to deny Hydro in their request to drop our bug-kill trees. From what I’ve seen and heard, they’ll drop them in a big messy pile and leave it for us to clean up. Screw that. We’ll be applying for the Timber mark on Monday, and the logging should be completed by the end of May.
My new book came in the mail today!! Diana Gabaldon’s latest . I am keeping the faith with what Karen told me. Her last book in the Outlander series was a huge disappointment. This one better not suck. That’s all I’m saying. Will be sure to post a review.
Hm. Never knew Mazzy Star was this good.
