Speaking of books.

February 25, 2007

Current read: Sex with the Queen.

Excellent book. For non-fiction (which I can’t always get into fully), it’s a riveting read. I never thought about it, but the author’s point about royal wives often having less money to spend and freedom than most peasants is likely true. If I were to go back & live in that time period, I doubt I’d wish to be a royal.

And now? I must go & find her other book: Sex With Kings.

Only Monday.

April 17, 2006

Gah. I have 5 days of work ahead of me. How annoying. With my coworker still out of commission, it’s sure to be a busy week, too. Bah.

I’m almost finished another book: In The Company of the Courtesan, which has been surprisingly good. I’ve read several books that take place in the 16th century, but this is the first that is set in Italy - specifically, Rome and Venice. In some ways, it awakens the travel gene in me…Venice must be a beautiful city, and I hope to see it one day.

This weekend also included another movie. The Squid & the Whale isn’t what I’d call a great movie, but it’s passable. Jeff Daniels’ character was an insufferable prick - pompous and overeducated barely scratch the surface. Bleh. However, it was an interesting way to pass 90 minutes of my day off. I’ll leave my review, such as it is, at that.

I have also discovered a new TV show, as if I need any more damn reason to watch the idiot box. Sigh. I highly recommend “What About Brian.” It’s funny. In my books, funny is good, especially when it does not include the following: tired/overdone/boring sitcom “jokes” that were barely funny 20 years ago and have long passed their sell-by date; a canned laugh track and/or studio audience who laugh on cue, like trained monkeys; totally unbelievable stories and/or characters. WAB has none of the above. I will continue to watch.

I recently realized that since the demise of Friends, there is not a sitcom on TV that I manage to watch anymore. People tell me that this or that show is “great” and I still don’t watch. Perhaps another Seinfeld or Friends will come along…it would have to be something special in order to catch my eye. Of course, I’d have to deign to watch it, which could be an issue. Har.

Back to my book. And Medium, w hich starts in 3 minutes. Or I could watch it at 10. Gotta love the satellite!

Saturday night questions.

April 15, 2006

How on earth can one (two? I fucking hope not.) mouse be residing in my kitchen? We have three cats. One of whom is quite the mouser. Not that you’d assume it lately. This is the cat who offers up near-daily sacrifices during the summer months. Now? She hasn’t even noticed our little kitchen friend. Gah.

Don’t you hate it when a movie is not anything like you expected? Ok, it was a little bit, but not overall. I watched A History of Violence tonight. Wha? Huh? I didn’t dislike it. I just can’t say I really liked it, either.

Why does it have to snow at Easter? Seriously. This is stupid. Almost all our snow is gone, and then we get hours of the white shit falling yesterday. I suppose I should be happy it didn’t stick to the roads or stay long once the temps came up. Hmph.

Don’t you also hate when a really good book ends? Especially when the previous book in the series sucked in a huge way. The new book makes me want more, more, more.

Ever noticed how weekend TV is absolutely terrible? Sure I could have watched March of the Penguins again, and now LOTR: The Return of the King is on. Hobbit crying. Men gathering for war. Freaky orcs killing. I do love this movie, but not every. damn. weekend.

Damn movie. It’s sucking me in. Will NOT stay up until 1:30 to see the end. No.

Reading.

January 27, 2006

This is my current read. (no, I haven’t finished the Amy Tan one, but whatever)

I love this author. I’ve decided it’s because she makes her characters believable, and it’s about a time in history which fascinates me. Plus, it’s not a bodice-ripping histrionical romance. (bleh)

Her others, which I enjoyed as much as this one:

The Other Boleyn Girl
The Queen’s Fool

Next on my list:

The Virgin’s Lover

Along the same lines, I have nothing but praise for Margaret George’s wonderful books. They’re monsters, but they’re well worth the time.

An Autobiography of King Henry VIII
Mary, Called Magdalene
Mary, Queen of Scotland and the Isles

Henry is by far the best of the three, in my readerly opinion. All are worth a read.
